Gearing Up for Grand Designs Live

Last year I visited Grand Designs Live and had the best day. I was overwhelmed by the size of the place and how many amazing things it was filled with; from amazing garden buildings to an automated house. There was so much to see and do, with sections spanning kitchens, bathrooms, technology, self building, gardens and interiors, Grand Designs Live really has a bit of everything when it comes to creating your dream home. Plus, Grand Designs Live actually comes to Birmingham NEC, which isn’t too far from where I live!

When the time came to start stalking the Grand Designs Live website for any news on the 2013 show I was so excited at what I found that I had to share it with you all.

– Extraordinary Spaces, Extraordinary People
When I came across Laura Clark as one of the speakers in the Grand Theatre, I pretty much had a meltdown. On the last series of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (one of my TV favourites) Laura showed the nation round her amazing home; some converted underground toilets in Crystal Palace. You don’t have to take my word for how amazing the finished home is, you can check it out on her blog here!

Jo Hamilton
Jo Hamilton is a favourite interior designer of mine. I met her briefly after her talk at GDL last year and she really was lovely! She took the time to give me a bit of advice in my interior design studies and it was great to have the chance to chat to a famous designer. This year she’s giving two talks; High Style, Modest Budget; Interior Inspirations at the Grand Theatre and Creating An Exciting Interior at the Grand Interiors Theatre.

– Grand Designs Live Garden Designer of the Year
Last year I really enjoyed the entries in the Grand Designs Live Garden Designer of the Year competition. I know very little about gardens or gardening, so naturally I’m always overwhelmed by how amazing these designers entries are and wonder how they dream up such great little creations. This year’s theme is the ‘Urban Kitchen Garden’, and I can’t wait to see what this year’s entrants have in store!

– Ask An Expert
Although this isn’t something I will be taking part in (as I don’t have a house to build and although I’d love to ‘have a go’, slots are limited and I’m sure someone else needs the place more than me) I think it’s a wonderful idea! At GDL you can book a slot and have a chance to ask an expert in the field questions about your build or interior. Even better, these appointments are free too. Amazing!

The Exhibitors
Last year I was stunned by how many stalls there were selling unique and inventive products for both the interior and the build of your house. There really was a vast mix, from canvas prints to a crazy rotating desk/bed. I can’t wait to see what exhibitors there are this year. I’ve restrained from looking too much on the website at this as I like surprising myself when I’m there.

Grand Designs Live Birmingham takes place from 4 – 6 October 2013 at Birmingham’s NEC. Save money by booking in advance: order your tickets online: or call the booking hotline on 0844 854 1348.

This year, I will be attending Grand Designs as press. As always, all opinions are my own and I only write about things I am truly inspired by!
